"Making Waterford Our Home" Exhibit Series

Did you know that the Irish community is the largest ethnic group in Waterford?

Have you ever wondered how or why so many residents of Irish descent came to live here?

This is the third in a four part exhibit series which explores the lives of three different immigrant groups in Waterford, New York: Italian Americans; Franco-Americans/French-Canadians; and, Irish Americans. This exhibition will run until April of 2012 and features the history and traditions of the Irish-Americans who made Waterford their home. The exhibit series will continue in 2012 as we explore the "roots" of Waterford's citizens with an online exhibit comparing the various experiences of each ethnic group and by maintaining a resource database on our website.

"This project has been a true community effort", said Museum Director, Brad Utter. "We have conducted oral histories with over 18 people of Irish descent and will have numerous photographs and objects on display that are on loan from our community members."

The exhibit would not be possible with out the help of local businesses Mohawk Fine Papers and One Day Sign, as well as a mini-grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.

Join us for the exhibit opening Friday, May 6, starting at 6:00, and share in the history.
